Unhappy Frig and Freezer not working. If you play with the setting comes on for a while.
Model Number: MSD2756AEW   Brand: Maytag   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

This unit came with the house and has worked fine in the garage. Only previous problem was ice accumulation on back wall of freezer. Now the frig and freezer are not cold. If you play with the slides to adjust temp will come back on temporarily, but eventually it is back to a slow death. Do I just call it a day or is there a potential fix that I can do. Help. Dr Bob

When the unit is cooling, working properly, how long does it take before it stops cooling?

Look at the back wall of the freezer compartment, do you have frost , snow or ice on the backpanel ?

If the defrost cycle is not operating, there will be an ice build up on the evaporator coils and air will not circulate properly and cool either compartment, if the build up is heavy enough.

You could have a faulty temperature control, but I don't think so,at this point.
A defrost problem is more likely on this type unit.

Look at the back wall of the freezer compartment, do you have frost , snow or ice on the backpanel ? It does not do that anymore, (but it did ) as it does not seem to get gold enough.

Is there anything I could listen for or test easily?

After you've checked for frost, snow or ice on the backwall of the freezer,

The only easy thing you can do is :

Wait until the unit is in a defrost cycle (no compressor running,no fan running).

Open the freezer door and listen for a light snapping, popping noise( water sizzling on the heater.

If you can darken the room and look for a red glow, at the bottom vent in the back wall(the defrost heaters can produce a red glow when on).

Otherwise you will need to remove the rear wall of the freezer and check the thermostat and heater for proper circuitry with a meter.
