Hi, My problem with my side by side ge is that the freezer side and the refrigerator side both went warm. I knew I was probably in big trouble; however, this morning both were working again. Common sense tells me that whatever happened once for several hours will soon happen again. Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm trying to figure out what happened and how to correct the problem before it happens again. I do know that when both sides were warm the motor was still running. Thanks..

Does it sound like a clock ticking in the freshfood section, upper right hand side?

One more thing... There is frost on the inside back of the freezer part of the refrigerator/freezer. That will probably tell someone familiar with the problem what to do.

also..... the motor doesn't shut off.... it just keeps running.....

Sounds very similar to my situation. I took the back panel off the freezer and found lots of frost/ice buildup; after defrosting, everything works fine for 1 - 2 weeks. I have an active thread pursuing possible solutions. The two most likely culprits, so far, are a defrost thermostat and heater; each costs about $20.

OK, under the control panel there is a defrost timer, turn the little "screw" clock wise unit the refrigerator shuts down. (If you turn a complete turn then it's your defrost timer.) If it shuts down after a little turn then let it run through the cycle (about 30 min) you should hear popping of ice and maybe a sizzle.
