Model Number: BCI20TW Brand: Amana Age: More than 10 years
My refrigerator (Amana BCI20TW) is having a problem with cooling. I cleaned the coils underneath and it was very dirty. Still didn't fix cooling. Checked the evaporative coils and at the very beginning of the coils it was solid frost. I couldn't even tell the thermostat was there because it was covered in ice/frost. I shut it down cleaned that all off and proceeded to watch what was happening in real time. Once I turn on the freezer I the fan starts blowing and I hear gurgling into the evaporative coils. Almost instantly the beginning of that coils starts to frost again around the thermostat. The gurgling continues for a few minutes, but the frost never goes further than the first 4 inches or so of that line. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

This would be out of the relm of a "do it yourselfer". It will require special tools, meters and equipment. I would have to reccomend you contact a servicer.

I guess that would almost certainly mean that I should look at purchasing a new refrigerator? A local repair guy told me that anything outside of the typical stuff essentially means get a new one. That sound about right?

That would be up to you, and you may want to consider that option. Were it me I would do some comparison shopping, first. A sealed system repair could cost as little as $400.00-$500.00.
