What drives the defrost cycle, the defrost thermostat or the defrost timer? My fridge keeps turning the conpressor off and won't always turn back on. Any sugestions to narrow it down?

I am having the same problem with a Amana model # ARS9265BB.
Worked great since 2005, then stopped cooling this past weekend for 2 days and then started back cooling. Could hear circulation fan running in freezer side, lights worked, but no cooling.

Bob, check the threads under "Defrost Cycle" I still haven't solved the problem. It definitely wasn't the defrost timer.

Mine was a fried overload relay. Replaced yesterday, so far seems to be functioning properly.

I was advised to check overload relay and the start/run capacitor. These two items were piggybacked on the side of the compressor. When I removed the relay, it rattled , indicating loose pieces. Put on new overload relay and start capacitor and it seems to be ok.
