Unhappy Freezer not going into defrost mode
Model Number: 253.63712302   Brand: Kenmore   Age: 1 - 5 years

I am having a time with my fridge. The freezer is supposed to keep the fridge part cool. The problem is that the freezer doesn't go into defrost mode like it used to, blocks the ducts, and the stuff in the fridge gets warm. Now I have to remove the panel at the back of the freezer and defrost it every 2-3 days.

Any tips on what could be the culprit, or what to look for?

Many thanks, Sharkster

Wow.........I have the same problem with a Whirlpool ED22. Looks like it should be a fun time. Could be the defrost timer, the defrost heater, the defrost termination thermostat, or a wiring problem. Blow drier to the rescue for now. I just installed new door cams because I noticed the door hanging open and figured that was the culprit. Your unit should have a service and wiring sheet tucked away somewhere. It may show how to force unit into defrost, for trouble shooting purposes. My first guess would be the timer but you will need a VOM to check things out (a second fridge would help too......where does the food go for now........my wife says we can eat out for a few weeks!!

snarkster,

Locate the defrost timer (#23 on the break down diagram) and follow the instructions 4 through 6 from one of our previous posts: Freezer is fine, refrigerator is too warm.

The defrost heater is #14 on the break down diagram and the defrost thermostat is #21 on the break down diagram.

Post the results and I'll help you with the right part numbers.

Gene.

Thank you Gene for the information. I turned the defrost timer clockwise and waited 15 minutes. No sizzling. I tested the defrost heater and it has some resistance. Am I right to assume the problem is the defrost thermostat?

sharkster,

Yes, you're right.

- The part number for the defrost thermostat is AP2150133

I have been tied up getting a car back in service so the fridge is sitting for now. Curiously enough, I can observe water in the drain pan at times. I assume this is a good indicator that everything is working fine. I will sit back and get some more history. It has been good for three days now and our northern Illinois weather is pretty hot and humid right. Time will tell. Thanks for all the information and for your time. These forums are a good return for broadband costs. Last month I installed a new air conditioning condenser in my Toyota, and before that I got my Whirlpool Duet clothes drier back in serice, all thanks to these web sites. Thanks again for a great service!

Thanks again Gene. I will be ordering the new part soon and let you know how it goes.

If only I could get an answer for my dryer problem, I would have it made.

Thanks again..... Sharkster
