Model Number: ED5RHEXNL03 Brand: Whirlpool Age: 1 - 5 years
I need to remove the cover from this side-by-side ice/water unit. I saw one parts diagram for the back plate showing two hooks at the bottom so it appears that the top has to be released and then you lift up on the cover. My problem is to find out how to release the top. The local appliance store was not able to help. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. I dont want to have to break the cover as Whirlpool says a new one is about 200 dollars w/ shipping etc. added. Thanks !
Saturday Morning update. Gene, I talked to APP yesterday and they tell me that the 'shell' is not available. I called Whirlpool and they say I have to buy the whole door. about $600 bucks - Do you know of any place that might have a used, (or new), one? If not I guess the only option is to attempt to repair the existing 'shell' . . . Dan'l Ads By Google Related Models Last edited by Dan'l Le Sage : 06-26-2010 at 06:55 AM. |

Back again Gene. I got the cover off safely . . . MANY THANKS ! . . . The problem that I found is that one of the supports for the ice chute door's hinge pin is broken. As this is an intregal part of the black back plastic housing shell I will have to replace same.
Could you quote me a price for a new one and any sealant that I may need to use when attaching the new piece to the Freezer Door? (Any other parts or information or instructions that I need to change out this part?) Thanks again Gene ! Dan'l |

Ok . . . Thanks to Gene I got the Front Cover off. Then I determined that the back 'shell' was broken and tried to get one to no avail. (Would have had to get a new door and Whirlpool wanted 600 dollars for that).
. . . So, I was able to find a thin piece of brass to fabricate a part with and did just that to install alongside of the broken plastic strut on the 'shell'. It took a LOT of time and patience but I finally prevailed and the repair works as good as the new shell would have. 'reassembled the parts and replaced the cover, good as new. We got the front panel removed and aligned the ice flapper door back where it belonged. The right side plastic holder for the rod was broke off so we mixed some epoxy putty, formed it in a small rope and squished in around the existing plastic and the door pivot rod. We used a knife to assure none of the epoxy putty was on the white door piece that needs to pivot on the rod.
Thanks for the diagrams to help us get the cover off. |
