So much frost has formed around the freezing compartment that there's an 80% reduction in storage in this area.

I saw that the compartment is the actual evaporator. So, it appears that the evaporating is not working.

Can you provide me with any further trouble shooting methods?

Remove the food, unplug it and defrost the unit.
A hair dryer is OK to help speed up melting off the ice.
Do not try chipping it off, if you poke a hole in a freon line your fridge is toast.

The heavy frost/ice acts like an insulator so the the coils cannot cool the unit properly.

Might be a good idea to also clean/check your door seal.
If it is letting in warm moist air the unit will frost/ice up quicker than it shoufd.
