I have a whirlpool washer that isn't working properly. If it is in the regular mode, it works fine start to finish. If it is put into the gentle or permanent press modes, it will fill and agitate, but not drain or go into the spin cycle. I know the lid switch is fine (i replaced it a year ago). what else could cause this?

Since it will work correctly in one cycle that suggests there are no mechanical problems with the unit and that the timer is at fault. Replacing it should fix your machine.
