Also you have to determine what is actually wrong with the system. If it is a leak and you have lost all your freon and that is why the compressor is not working then there is no use replacing the compressor, evacuating the system and refilling it with freon until the leak is found and fixed. Note: That this will not be cheap and often it makes more sense to replace the unit.
