A likely cause is a burnt off wire at the heating element. You will need to dismantle the dryer at least partially to get at it for repair. Not a good idea to try to use this until it is repaired.

I have a older whirlpool dryer. This morning I went to us, would have been first time it was used today, There was a pop and spark. Seem to be from bottom of dryer. And some light smoke was coming out of it. It immediately turned off. I had to go to work and wasnt yet able to take apart but if somebody had something similar, what would be the most likely cause?
