Check the freezer temperature. It should be between 0 and 5 degrees F.
If much warmer then this may be affecting the ice maker.
If is is colder then it could be a main control thermostat problem re: the unit is trying to reach too low of a set point temperature so runs all the time except during defrost cycles.
The constant running and hot side panels or section separator is often due to poor air flow around the condenser coils under the unit.
Check that the rear cover louvers and the front kick plate louvers are clean.
Check/clean the condenser coils under the unit.
Check that the unit is not pushed tight against the rear wall.
Check that the condenser fan is running.
Check/clean the condenser fan blade.
If all OK
Check that the evaporator/freezer fan is running OK.
If OK
Remove the cover in the freezer so you can inspect the evaporator coils.
They should have a fairly even coating of frost on them.
If there is frost only in one area (usually where the freon enters the coils) then it is probably a sealed system [problem.
You must be sure that the compressor has run for about an hour before doing this check. If you do it shortly after or during a defrost cycle you can end up with the wrong diagnosis.
