If you did open the door right after the cycle done, it can feel "hot" because of the hot water heated up the dishwasher inside. The "air only" means the heating element is off but there is not forced air flow inside the dishwasher.

You can carefully touch the heating element at the end of the cycle to verify if it's hot or not.

I have an older model Whirlpool dishwasher (DU8400XX1, morethan 10 years old). About a month ago, I noticed that while drying the dishes on the “Heat Dry” setting the temp when opening the door during, or at the completion of the cycle, seemed quite a bit hotter than usual. So, I then put the drying cycle on “Air Only” and that worked fine for a couple of weeks, no hot temp, just normal air dry. Now, even when on the “Air Only” cycle, and when I open the door at the end of the cycle the temp is quite hot. Any suggestionson what might be the problem? Or, what to troubleshoot??
