I am guessing that fabric softener has done what fabric softener does, which is to gum up everything. Try cleaning out the dispenser, and if you need more info please post a full model number so we can see what you have.
My personal opinion is that other than gunk up a washer fabric softener doesn't do anything for the wash process, but that's just me.

I put fabric softener in the dispenser at the top of the agitator. When the cycle is finished, there is blue softener flung all around the top of the machine. I have thoroughly cleaned out every part I can. Any suggestions?
