So, if I disconnect the supply line from the valve, will water leak backward through the valve if I have an issue? Is that what I am looking for?

That is good. I'm so happy for you, just be aware that it may happen again if the inlet valve is still leaking.

Turns out the fill tube was almost solid with ice. I pulled the ice maker and then saw that the tube was full if ice. I pulled that out and shoved a screw driver in one end.
A solid core of ice came out. It looked like a small version of one of those ice cores in the Antarctic.
Put it back in and re-installed the tube and it looks like everything is working fine now.

The water inlet valve on the back of the unit where the water supply comes in can have a slow leak and will cause ice to buildup and block the fill tube. Disconnect the ice maker line from the valve and watch to see if it has a slow drip. It doesn’t take much to eventually block the fill tube.
The valve can leak because of sediment in the water preventing it from closing or low water pressure.

I was recently on vacation and turned off the water to the house while I was gone. I came back and turned on the water. After a couple days, I noticed icicles in the freezer and ice sheets under the ice tray.
I waited through an ice making cycle and actually saw what was happening. Instead of filling the ice tray nicely, the water was splashing all over the back of the freezer. Some water made it into the tray but obviously something is wrong.
Just thought I'd ask what to look for before I yank out the ice maker to investigate.
