I opened the cover and felt the relays on the board and determined one of them was the source of the sound. I unplugged the unit and tried letting it set for about an hour. When I plugged it back in the unit seemed to want to start (that is I heard the compressor momentarily start and the condensor fan begin to rotate) for about 1 second then the clicking started and all progress ceased.

I have ordered a motherboard but am unsure that this is the problem.

I had the same problem this week with a 2006 model. GE is sending me a new board for free. Evidently, this is a common problem. Call GE customer relations and speak with them............

It seems the new motherboard has fixed the problem.

Makes sense. Thank you for the details, I appreciate it. Can't be too optimistic with a compressor repair eh? Thanks again.

I guess it all depends how much you know about refridgeration. It would require you to be able to hard solder, vacum down the system, add oil and refrigerant to the proper level using a gage set. You would also have to add servicing valves as these are not included on modern home refridgeration units.

Sounds like the same problem I have with a 2001 Kitchenaid fridge that was diagnosed today by a technician as 'I need a new compressor.' Is a compressor something that one could install by oneself if one is mechanically and electrically inclined?
