Take off the front panel by inserting a screw driver in the gap between the front and the top near the edges to release clips that hold it on.

You can then see if the belt if gone. Check the pump for a problem and see if the pulley on the transmission turns.

When I started a load of laundry the tub filled with water but did not agitate.. there was a smoke smell coming from the washer. Is that the belt or the motor? The motor sounded like it was running but nothing was happening.
