One or both of your door links has broken and now you feel the full weight of the door. I covered this in my post Kitchenaid Dishwasher Door Drops when Opened from my blog. The kit is easy to install with some basic tools.

When I was opening the door there was a loud pop noise and the door no longer had any resistance. When you open it you have to be careful- it just falls right open. I think this happened once before but it was under warranty and a repair man came and fixed it so I don't know what it was.
