Remove the softener top and the agitator cap, reach in to pull the clear plastic cover, then remove the 7/16 nut, then pull out agitator.
It is rather rare these strip out, so you might have a bad tranny if it fails to agitate.

How do I remove the agitator in order to put a new one on?
