To answer your question, no the range doesn't know how dirty it is. Chances are the self clean mode has malfunctioned, which is part of the control board.
I myself never use te self clean on the oven as virtually all the ranges with self clean seem to have issues.

I've got this 2 year old oven, only tried once before today to self clean. The first time, it would start fine, then abort within 1/2 hour. Sometimes sooner. I took out the racks and then it seemed to work fine.

(Oh, I just remembered, before that time, I had it running and my kid turned it off, thinking something was wrong, I have unplugged it for a bit as well trying to reset if required).

Today, I'm having the same issue, it won't go through the 3 hour cycle, only aoubt 1/2 hour. It does turn on, get hot, I can smell it.

Does this oven know when its really dirty or is it supposed to run the entire cycle I choose? (new dishwashers can tell how dirty they are).
