Is the noise heard during startup or do you hear a grinding noise while operating and the spray arms are spraying?
The reason I ask is that I had a similar grinding (horrible) noise when the dishwasher was running and the problem turned out to be a loose spray arm in the middle - the one below the top basket. I secured the tube that supplies water to the spray arm to the upper rack with a plastic tie wrap and the problem went away!
Something you may want to try.

When our Maytag dishwasher starts up it makes a grinding sound. I have removed the lower spray arm and the circular plastic cover over the chopper and couldn't find any debris in there. But also didn't know if I needed to go further. Also removed lower access panels to listen to noiseand it is emitting from around the motor. There's also an occassional humming sound that sounds similar to a solenoid valve functioning - but is a noise that we have never heard before. Any ideas or suggestions?
