Yup, after a closer look, the switch mechanism is working, it is just the plastic housing around it is cracked, so when the paddle is depressed by the door, it doesn't engage the switch (you can do in manually by holding the plastic together). I presume replacing the entire switch mechanism with wiring back to the control unit is the best option here?

I suspect I have the same problem with a bad switch. How can I override the switch to confirm this problem? I have a whirlpool top-load washer, model #LSR8244EQ0.

Dana, If the motor is running but the washer does not agitate nor spin, the problem most likely is a bad motor coupling. Remove the washer cabinet and check the coupling (#13 on the diagram). The instructions are attached to the reply. - The motor coupling Part number: AP3963893

Dana, The first failure suspect is the lid switch. Does it click when you open or close the lid? If it does not, replace it. If you are not sure, bypass the lid switch to see if the washer will work. - The lid switch Part number: AP3100003
