It does not sound like the transmission is bad if you can turn the transmission pulley in each direction.

I would replace the belt, operate the machine with the front off and see if you can determine the problem.

I have amana washing machine burned up belt. Checked pump could spin pully, could pump water in tub, could spin wheel below tub that belt goes around, couldn't spin agitator in tub keep in mind I haven't replaced belt, could the trans. be bad?
