Hello, There is an electrical short somewhere inside the cooktop. You have to remove it from the counter, take it apart and inspect the wires and parts. You may need to check some parts for continuity and will need a multimeter to do it. Let us know when you will be ready. Here are the breakdown diagrams and Parts for Maytag MEC5430BDB Cooktop - AppliancePartsPros.comGene.

Hello all.
So here's the situation.
To start off, I live in a condo with a circuit breaker panel in the unit, and separate master power switch controlled by the condo.
While the gf was cooking, she saw a flash/spark in the upper left burner. Following this, it threw the oven's circuit breaker, and also the master power switch controlled by the condo. I've already confirmed that it is indeed the cooktop that's at fault - power is fine when it's not plugged in.
So, question: what could be wrong? Some fuse dead in the cooktop? I've never tried to fix appliances before...
Thanks.
