Additional info:

Replacing the heater element on that model also requires changing the control board. The board is part of the replacement heater element part number.

The original element is prone to this failure. The new element is a different type and runs at a higher temp. The control board must be replaced also because the drying time cycle is now shorter.

I just went through this with my dishwasher. Check your warranty.

My dishwasher is a kitchenaid but they are all made by whirlpool.

See this link I started a few weeks ago, I received all the parts for free under warranty.

the heating element has probably failed. This will cause the dishes to not dry.

The slime you finding is the black coating on the heating element falling off and spraying around the inside of the tub.

Check the element for pitting and spots where the coating is missing.

Replacing the element will fix both issues.

Make sure the indicator light above the "Air dry" button is off. If this is not the issue then check the heating circuit according to the wiring diagram.

Jon,

It definitely does, but you have to choose this option on the control panel. If you would not then your dishes will never dry.
