Default Not Baking - Literally!
Model Number: JBP56GS1   Brand: GE   Age: More than 10 years

My oven will no longer bake correctly. I checked and when on Bake, the top element will not heat. When on Broil the top element heats up. If I replace the top broil element will that correct the problem? Repair service would cost me $150-200. so if I cannot repair it myself I am considering new. Thanks.

No, it won't. Sounds like there's nothing wrong with the top element.

Are you sure the top element used to come on during the BAKE cycle? Bottom is the bake element, while top is the broil element. On some models, the broil element would come on to assist the bake element, but that's pretty rare. I've had more cases where people would call for service because they assumed both elements were supposed to be on during the BAKE cycle only to find out otherwise...

Thanks, that takes care of that resoning. But my oven still will not heat up properly. I needed to have it at 390* to get it to 350* and at that it would not stay up to 350* all the time. Is this something I can repair myself? I really cannot afford a new range at this time.

The board is what's responsible for bringing the oven up to set temperature. There is no other sensor, thermostat, etc. You can try adjusting the board first, since the temperature is only off by ~40 degrees. If that doesn't help, replacing the board should (this GE model has an expensive board - $220).
