Default Wiring Pattern Differs on Replacement Burner
Model Number: RF378LXKQ   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com
I just purchase a replacement burner for the rear left burner of my Whirpool range. The part number is 8273994. The terminals for the wiring have the same terminal size and quantity, but they are in different locations. Can you please let me know what wire goes where with the new replacement burner? I have attched photos of the old burner wiring prior to dis assembly and the new burner. On the old burner, the smaller and larger terminals are on opposites sides, but are on the same sides on the new burner.

The heating element consists of two parts: the heating coils and the limiter. The limiter consists of two thermal switches with the two terminals each. One switch operates with the heating coils and the other one operates with the hot surface indicator light.

According to the wiring diagram (page 4), the two wires from the infinite switch (terminals H1 & H2) should be connected to the heating coils terminals on the heating element (two terminals near the body of the heating element or the inner switch). The two other wires (L1 & hot surface indicator light) should be connected to the outer switch. There is no polarity or in an other words it does not matter which wire from the pair to which terminal is connected.

The limiter switches are shown on the following picture.

Default Thanks

Thanks Gene. I am still a bit confused. It looks the old burner had the 2 yellow wires (H1 and H2) closest to the burner body and are the largest sized terminals. The smaller sized terminal are on the outside and have a black and yellow wire connected to them.

With that, am I to connect the the two yellow larger terminals to both of the terminals on the top (looking at my picture of the new burner) and the two smaller terminals, one yellow and one black to the bottom terminals? And they do not have to be in any sequence?

Thanks

The easiest way on how to make sure you are on the right track is to check for continuity between the terminals. It should read some resistance on the heating coils and very close to 0 ohms for the second switch. I'm not sure about size of terminals but I believe it's not a major issue.

Default Thanks Again

Thanks again Gene.

Unfortunately, I do not have the tools required to test for continuity. When I accepted the project, I was under the impression that when you order a replacement part, it would be exactly the same as the part being replaced and thus, would only have to replicate the wiring sequence of the old burner.

If there is any way you can tell by the picture of the wiring of the old burner, where the the wiring should go on the new burner, I would be very apprciative.
