Model Number: JKP07G*J5 Brand: GE Age: More than 10 years
Have a GE single wall oven that is 17 1/2 years old. It doesn't heat evenly, browns tops of items but inside not done.
I ran a check on it for one hour with an oven thermometer inside at 350 degrees & checked it every 5 minutes. It varied from 340 - 380 degrees. Does this indicate the need for a new thermostat? Is it wise to spend $200 on a part for an oven that old? Have been looking at a new Kitchenaid Model # KEBK171SBL but have been reading horror stories on-line about when using the self-clean the oven would clean then not work again until new parts were put in. Do you know anything about this? Ads By Google Related Models |

Which cycle did you use when you cooked? Bake or Broil?
Where did you place the thermometer during the test? There was an ongoing problem with some Whirlpool and Kitchen Aid oven models due to improper air flow during self clean cycle, causing the thermal fuse to blow. Hopefully they fixed this issue on the newer models. Gene.

Cooked on Bake. My oven has 5 rack positions & I placed the oven thermometer on the 3rd rack (3rd down from from the top). This is the position I usually use, except when broiling. |

The difference in the oven temperature within 25°F range for such old oven with the electric-mechanical thermostat is pretty normal.
On another side there is a good chance the new thermostat will make it better and your decision should be based on the age and the condition of the unit and your wife's preferences. Gene.
