Our Whirlpool double electric oven beeps like it has reached the set pre-heat temperature (say 350F) but will be 25-50F less than it according to a portable oven thermometer. I then raise manually raise the set point to 365F or so to get it to kick on and reach the right temperature. Is the controller the problem or the sensor? Thanks for feedback....

Here is a tech sheet
http://www.servicematters.com/docs/wiring/Tech%20Sheet%20-%204451887.pdf

I am assuming that once it hits the set temperature, it runs OK.

It may just need adjusting, see the tech sheet.

The next possible cause would be the temperature sensor.
Following is a good link on how to check it.
Check out #'s 7, 8, 20 and 21.

It also could be a dirty or bad connection in the sensor circuit.
This is a positive coefficient device re: resistance rises as temperature rises.
So a bad/dirty connection makes the control board think that the oven is hotter than it actually is.
