The glass cooktop on my kitchenaid range cracked . All the burners still work and since it's convection I'd prefer to replace the glass vs. the range.

In looking at the KAC-38 manual I have a couple of questions

1. my model is the freestanding kind with the back piece on it (p 13 shows both styles) - the manual shows the model without the back piece on p 29 where it covers removing the glass cooktop. I assume I have to remove the back piece from the freestanding - but there is no mention of anything relating to that back piece. I'm assuming it just comes off with a couple of screws?

2. The text mentions removing the control panel - yet the picture where the glass is being removed on p 4-5 still shows the control panel in place. So I'm confused - does the control panel have to be removed to replace the glass top?

Thanks for any info
