I purchased a new broiler element for the upper oven but now am in a mess. I unscrewed everything (support bar and element) I was told that the new one would "just slip right in", Well I can't get the old one off. I've pulled but they don't budge. The wires are exposed but don't see how to unhook them...HELP I've got a flashlight and a magnifing mirror and what all in the oven...

This is the best I could find to show how the elements are connected using push on connectors Push-On Terminals Usually they do not have a lock so should just push off. The element is the male end, the wire has the female end Note it is a good idea to clip something (clothespin etc.) onto the wire so that it does not disappear into the back of the stove. Also do not pull on the wires as they will pull out of the push on receptacle (female end). Often you can push them off with a screwdriver if they are very tight. |

I tried that but can't find just where to push the screwdriver. I'll probably end up stabbing myself. These things are literallly "baked on", I believe.

I was wondering if maybe I could spray some WD40 on the terminals that they may loosen? Do you think that could harm the terminals?

First check to be sure there is not a little lock holding them on.
You could try it. I would spray some into the cap and then use a small brush to apply it to the connectors. You do not want to get it all over. Once you get them off then I would clean them with isopropyl alcohol to get rid of the WD40 residue.
Liquid Wrench would probably do a better job.
Also when you do get them off inspect the connectors closely. If they are pitted or you cannot get them clean it would be a good idea to replace them. Be sure to get the high current rating type.
If you do not get a good connection between the wires and the element this is electrically a resistance. As the current flows through this it creates heat which will degrade the connection increasing the resistance and therefore the heat and so on and so on till the connection fails. |
