Default Oven re-ignites occassionally, then quits completely
Model Number: GS440LEMQ   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: 1 - 5 years

Hello, I have an intermittent problem with my Whirlpool Gold Accubake oven (Model #: GS440LEMQ). During the normal course of baking the oven will obviously re-light many times to maintain the set temperature. I have a situation where sometimes the oven will begin to lose heat and never re-light. I can tell when this is about to happen because I'll see the "HEAT" indicator come on, then I'll hear the ignitor start clicking along with the gas coming on. After about 5 clicks, the gas shuts off. After a couple of minutes, it will cycle through and try again. Eventually, it will stop cycling throught the ignition process and just give up completely. At this point, I hit "CANCEL" and wait about 15 mins. to turn on the oven again.

When everything is working, I'll only hear 1 or 2 clicks and then the gas continues to flow (based on the "hissing" sound). It almost seems like the oven realizes that its not getting a good ignition, so it gives up completely.
The rangetop works fine.
Any help would be appreciated...Thanks.

According to the manufacturer service pointer cause of the intermittent bake burner operation is improper air flow to the burner.

The correction is to replace the bake burner with the new modified burner and igniter assembly.

- The part number for the burner & igniter assembly is AP3598752

Hi...Thanks so much for this info. One last question: Is this relatively easy to replace. I'm assuming that you have to at least disconnect power, remove the oven pan and flame spreader. Is it then just a simple remove and replace? Also, do you know if the part comes with some instructions or diagrams? Thanks again.

You are on the right track and this part is not too difficult to replace yourself.

I do not think it has any special instructions, but you'll see how it goes after the oven floor and the bottom drawer removed.

Hi Gene.

Thanks again for the info. I'd like to go ahead and order this part through this site. I'm wondering though, since my oven is still covered under limited warranty, I should be able to get this part for free from Whirlpool. I asked Whirlpool about this, and they said that was possible only if the part was ordered through a certified Whirlpool technician. Do you know if there is any way to make that happen thru this site? Thanks.

To order the part through a certified Whirlpool technician means you have to place a service call with a Whirlpool authorized service company and pay whatever they charge to come over and diagnose.
