Whenever using the oven for baking, for no apparent reason the oven will shut off and go to the broiling mode. We have no indication this is happening other than the smell of burning baked goods. It has happened twice over the last 3 months and we a afraid to let anything in the bake mode unless we are right near the kitchen. At other times we could put a roast in the oven and go about our business in the house. Do you have any possible explanation why this may be happening and what part would potentially repair the problem. There was no "blip" in the electrical currant or no other interruption that we can recall. It is truly a random situation.
Thanks for any help provided.

Here are your parts
Parts for Magic Chef 5898VVV Range - AppliancePartsPros.com

If your clock has a broil indicator and it shows the unit switching to the broil mode then I would say it is the clock (control board) (item 6 in section 6).
Looks like this part is obsolete.
There are companies out there that will fix obsolete timers but since your problem is intermittent I do not know if this would be a reliable fix.

If there is no indication on the clock then it could be the clock or the relay board (item 14 in section04).
It is normal for ovens to switch back and forth between the bake and broil elements in pre-heat and bake modes. This gives a more even temperature profile in the oven. Could be that the broil relay is sticking closed.

Unfortunately I cannot find any tech info on this unit so cannot help on how to actually test things.

Note that if you click on a part's picture or description a new page will open with more info about thatpart which may be useful to you.
