Default Not preheating sometimes-Broil no problem
Model Number: GT247582G   Brand: GE   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Just replaced the broil and bake elements about 2 weeks ago. Oven was preheating for bake no problem. Then about two nights ago I set it to about 400 and came back 15 minutes later and it was just warm. Have been testing it for about 3 days now. Keep setting temp on bake (different temps) and some times it preheats no problem but some times it just gets warm.

Normally with this oven it beeps when it reaches preheat. If it is not functioning correctly where it does not get to set temp it does not beep and it only remains warm. If I shut it off and set a different temp it may heat to that set temp and beep within a few minutes.

I know the knob is working correctly because the oven has a digital readout and as I turn the knob I see the temp go up in degrees on the readout.

The broil works all the time. I have set the bake to the same temp two times in a row and it does not make a difference but this particular time it happened to reach the proper temp within just a few minutes.

I don't think it is the thermostat but could be wrong.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

This is still confusing me. I have not been able to find any pattern as to when the oven preheats on Bake cycle. As I said the broiler always works properly. The oven heats sometimes. If I set it to like 350 I can let it sit for 10 minutes and it does not even get hot; just warm. If I crank it up to 450 then it heats up and I can turn it down to 350. Sometimes I will set it at 350 and it heats up just fine in a few minutes. Just can't find a pattern though. If I set it at 350 and it does not heat up sometimes I have to shut if off and then back on again for it to heat up.

Totally confused as to what the problem is.

I had similar issue with my wall oven only mine has 3 options. Bake, broil and time bake. I had never used time bake but the broil always worked and sometimes bake would get hot and other times it wouldn't and sometimes when it did work and reached correct temp it would not kick back on and I would think my food was done but it wasn't. Anyway, it was the oven switch that had gone out and it is a cheap part.

canifixit14: thanks for sharing that with me. I am thinking though if it may be the oven knob in my case as I turn it the digital display shows that I am increasing the temp that I want it to reach. So not so sure if that is the issue; however even though the digital display is showing the temp going up as I turn it on does not necessarily mean that the unit it self is registering the turning of the knob. I was hoping that someone may have a troubleshooting technique that I may use. I sure would hate to have to replace the oven because the service call for GE would be horrible plus any parts. I don't mind paying for a part if I know I need it but I can replace it myself. I am an electrician only don't have the knowledge of troubleshooting the oven nor the schematics to go by.

Anyone else have any suggestions about this?

Thanks to all of you.

I cannot find any info on the given model number.
Tried here, the GE site and Sears with no luck.
Please check it.
Find your model number - AppliancePartsPros.com

If this is not a North American unit then info may not be available to me.

If the unit uses an electronic control board/clock/timer that has the element control relays on it then I would say that that is the problem.

Sorry for slow reply "denman". Have been busy dealing with other issues with the house and work.

Meantime when I first contacted GE about the problem they gave me the part numbers to order for the bake and broil elements.

They also provided me with a link to the owners manual for the model. Although I don't see anywhere on the manual does it state specifically for my model number.

http://products.geappliances.com/Mar...49-80494-1.PDF

The part numbers they gave me are:
Part needed, WB44X10009 (bake element)
Part needed, WB44X10015 (broil element)

Last night I tried using it again (besides other times) and had to keep turning it to different bake temps, waiting a few minutes and then trying again by turning it off and back on again setting it to a new temp bake cycle. Most of the time just the broil element tends to warm up. Sometimes the bake and broil elements heat up but then the bake elements stops heating. So it is a matter of turning it on, waiting and then off and back on again until it even heats up. The electrical connections are good. Measuring voltage at the back of the stove I get 120V hot to neutral on each leg and 240v from hot to hot.

I am aware that it will cycle back and forth between the bake and broil element as it heats but sometimes as I said the bake element is actually cold to the touch even after waiting as long as 8 minutes, where the broil element is hot.

As I said I don't want to just go replacing parts at random just hoping it will work again. If I had a more specific part to replace I would not mind so much replacing it. The stove is an older one and according to GE discontinued. If I have to spend more than $100 more just not worth it. Already spent money on the elements and could have bought a new stove with less capability and not have to worry about it.

Thanks so much

Sorry I cannot find any info without a model number so cannot advise you.

It sounds to me like it is either a control board or the control thermostat problem but I do not know which item your unit uses.
Some units use a control thermostat and have a digital timer but the timer is really just a timer and does not control the elements like a digital control board does.
I also cannot tell you if the part is available.

I guess then I will have no choice but to deal with the issue until I can afford to buy another stove/oven.

I do know that the timer does not control the bake cycle; it is simply just a timer.

P.S. would it help any if I take a picture of the control panel and post it here.

Ok, have posted two pics of the front panel. One close up for the display and second of a layout of control panel and knobs.

P.S. I have just requested from GE a present model # that uses the same controller that mine uses hoping that this may assist.
