Replaced ignitor, gas oven still won't light

I ordered and replaced the flat oven ignitor and it now glows when the oven is turned on, then I hear and smell gas, but the oven doesn't get hot. The gas odor was pretty strong so I only tried it for about 15 seconds. Do I need to leave the oven turned on longer...the smell just freaked me out.
