On vacation at a friend's cottage last week, had a problem with his Whirlpool electric range. Pushed broil then start on touchpad and control board sparked and smoked. Called Whirlpool and ordered new control board and touchpad but once installed the broil element comes on uncontrolled. The control board seems to be fine; clock works, bake element controllable, haven't tried broil yet for fear of frying it again. Looking more closely it appeared that broiler element, where it penetrates the back of the stove, had arced where it was too close to the edge of the knockout. Removed and reinstalled broiler element with proper clearances but it still heats up when power to stove is restored. Is there a chance that a clean cycle switch was fried along with control board? I'd like to get this fixed for him so I'd appreciate any help I can get and thanks in advance.
