Default GE Oven - F3 error
Model Number: JDP36G0P1WH   Brand: GE   Age: More than 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

I apologize if this has been posted already, but I couldn't find a post with this exact scenario.

I have an old GE range, which would indicate F2 errors periodically. I replaced the temperature sensor, and now I get F3 errors any time I turn on the oven.

There is a technician's sheet in the unit, which I used to diagnose the problem. It says for an F3 error, I should check the resistance between the sensor's leads, and between each lead and the grounded chassis. The sensor reads ~1100 ohms, regardless of where I read it (at the sensor or at the control-board connector).

When the sensor is hanging loose and is not touching the oven body, both leads are about 40K ohms to the chassis. When I attach the sensor to the body, one of the leads reads 1160 ohms to the chassis. The other lead has only 60 ohms resistance between it and the chassis.

The tech sheet does not say what the resistances should be. Are those readings (1160 and 60 ohms) correct? Regardless, does anyone have any idea where I should look next?

One other note: I've already removed the control board and have checked the solder joints on the connector posts. They looked good, but I soldered them again, just in case.

Thanks,
jw

Check all the wiring in that temp sensor circuit by continuity testing.........The probe should read around 1k ohms for room tempature the problem is when testing the probe you really need to have the oven working because you need to test the ohms at 350 degrees which should be around 16k ohms.......if you can take a blowdryer to the oven sensor and see if the ohms go up as it heats up.....if it does then it may be good and you have a short in the harness or bad connection in that circuit check your tech sheet inside the unit........Google search GE OVEN F3 code and read all the links that pop up you'll see a ton of them. Maybe Contact GE directly about your problem for advice also it seems it's a major issue with their ovens.

Thanks for the response.

I put the sensor in a toaster oven and watched the resistance rise as the temperature rose, so I feel confident that the (brand new) sensor works. The tech sheet says to check resistance between the probe's leads and ground, but it does not say what the readings should be. Since the resistance is 40 ohms when the sensor is attached, I suspect that the control board reads that as a short circuit, and throws an F3 error.

The funny thing is that I did search for GE OVEN F3 - it led me to this forum.

I may contact GE directly, but I'm not sure how much they're going to help me with a 20-year-old range. I guess I won't know until I try.

Thanks,
jw

If it's a 20 year old range then you probably have a bad or loose wire somewhere possibly but it could be anything....20 year old units are fairly simple compared to newer units for sure.......Just track the wires and inspect them very close, worse case scenerio if you can't buy a new harness you can buy range wiring by the foot and rewire it yourself if your handy. Good luck
