I just received a new thermostat for the whirlpool stove. The wireing on the old thermostat is different than the part I was sent. The new part has 4 lugs, with the top two looped with a black wire. This leaves two lugs with no identification of what color wires. The old thermostat had three lugs across the top of the element. The wireing was red, a combined red and black, and another black. I have tried different combinations of hooking up the wires but thus far, the heat element light does not come on, but the top oven burner will come on. Please advise as to how to hook up the wires. Thanks, Rod Miller

Are the terminals on the new and old thermostats marked?

Gene.

Angry Thermostat hook up

I am trying to respond to Gene on his blog reply to my problem. He asked if the terminals were marked on the new and old thermostats. The old thermostat terminals were numbered as 1,2,3. The new thermostat is not numbered nor is their a color codeing for the wireing. It has a total of 4 terminals and the old thermostat has a total of 3 terminals. I would appreciate you help. Thanks, Rod

Hi Rod,

You have to have a simple Ohmmeter to check the new thermostat terminals for continuity and figure out which wire where should be connected.

According to the Wiring sheet, one of the tree terminals (the two terminals connected with the black wire we count as a one terminal) should be connected to the Red wire (incoming power L2). We'll call this terminal "common".

The second terminal should be connected to the Blue wire, providing power to the Broil heating element while the thermostat set to Broil. At this time there suppose to be continuity between the common and Broil terminals only.

The third terminal should be connected to the wires, providing power to the Bake heating element and the indicator light. You have to trace these wires from the indicator light and the Bake heating element. At this time there suppose to be continuity between the common and the Bake terminals only.

When the thermostat is in "off" position no continuity should be between the terminals.

Gene.
