Default Jenn-Air Door Will Not Close
Model Number: JJW9630CAW   Brand: Jenn-Air   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

I have read other post about unlocking the hinges and pulling the door(s) off, but my model does not have a locking latch. The installation instructions do not show taking the doors off. This is a double oven and we very rarely use the lower oven, but both doors do not close all the way. The top door stays open enough for the internal light to stay on all the time. The top of the door, at the vent, has turned yellow. We have had to replace the controls about a year ago. I am thinking all the escaping heat will damage the control panel again. The door seal, for the top oven, is mostly pliable except for the bottom corners where pressure from door hinges, and heat, have formed a permanent crease.

I found a service manual that says to put a 1/8" diameter pin in the hole of both hinges and close the door until you feel the hinges and pins touch. Then just lift the door off. But, before that, the screws and hinge cover plates have to be removed from the oven side of the hinges. You could lift the door off without the pins and door fully open, but the service manual and other posts said not to install without the pins in place and hinges in closed position.
Most all the post from here and other sites have said replacing only the hinges does not always help in keeping the door closed. Thinking that the problem is with the hinge bracket on the oven side. This bracket is held in with two 1/4" screws. Either this bracket gets bent out of shape or the screws holes to bracket alignment is incorrect. Probably caused by the weight of the door being forced down when fully opened.

I took the door off and removed 8 screws in the door opening sides that hold the oven in the cabinet. After sliding the oven out 6-8 inches, I removed the hinge brackets from both sides. These parts are symmetrical, so I installed the left on the right and the right on the left. Perfect fit. The door hinge rest on 2 of the 3 rivets that also hold the bracket together. These rivets were not worn out. (For those that have replaced this bracket, you can switch sides.)
I took the oven door cover off by removing 3 screws on top and 3 screws on the bottom. The front will lift off the back. I removed the 1 screw holding the bottom of the hinge and with one hand holding the hinge open, I lifted the hinge out. I placed the hinge back on the oven brackets to check alignment. The top part of the hinge is definitely closer than the bottom, so the door should close tightly. But, it doesn't.
Maybe, as most of the post I have read, there was an engineering flaw and Jenn-Air decided not to recall the ovens. There seems to be a lot of models affected by this "door not closing" issue. I only hope that the hinge and/or hinge bracket was re-engineered and fabricated to move the bottom of the door out just enough for the top to close completely.
By the way, using screwdriver handles, wood blocks or any other items to place between the door and hinge and then closing the door to force the bottom out, will only bend the inside of the door or damage the hinge and/or hinge bracket. (I used to put toothpicks behind kitchen cabinet door hinges, too.)

According to the service/parts manual the part numbers for replacements are:
OEM Hinge - 71003350
OEM Hinge Receptacle Assembly - 71001828
(OEM = original equipment manufacturer)

The part numbers here, at Appliance Parts Pro are:
Hinge - 74008014
Hinge Receptacle Assembly - 74008015

Are these the correct parts? Were there changes to make them fit correctly?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the hinges or hinge brackets on my oven. There are no bends or wear spots. The parts fit perfectly. Does anybody know if the new parts have been redesigned to fit correctly? Ant is it the hinge or the hinge bracket that was changed?

Here is a video on how to take the door and hinge off.

The hinge brackets normally need to be replaced. They usually sell a kit that comes with 2 hinges, and 2 brackets. I have replaced just the hinges before and it does not solve the issues.
