Model Number: MER530AAL Brand: Maytag Age: 5 - 10 years
First, I have no idea how old the oven is....that is just a guess. We bought our house in August after renting for a year or so. The bottom heating element quit working, and when I took the back off the stove, I saw that the clip on the wire for one side was corroded through. Seems like a simple fix, but the more concerning thing is that there is some fiberglass insulation sticking through the holes in the back metal plate where various wires are connected to both heating elements is blackened. The insulation in question was actually sticking out and touching the metal connector. The insulation that was still pushed back was not affected. Should we be concerned? Everything is still working fine with no problem aside from the bottom heating element, although the insulation even around the top element has been blackened....not sure how long it has been that way as we've never had the back off before.

On second thought, they're some blackened insulation where there is no electrical connection at all and there's a big dripped, burned stain on the back cover where looks like something spilled down through at some point. The black parts are only one one side of the oven, and you can actually see an are where something liquid collected at the bottom lip of the back cover at some point. I tried a little experiment too....pulled out a little insulation and tried to light it...it just melted, and the areas in question look nothing like this.
