![]() Model Number: MER5755QAW Brand: -brand- Age: 5 - 10 years
![]() Well thanks to Gene I am still using my now 8 year old MER5755QAW. See "Electric oven issue - worth repair?" Recently one side of the door handle appeared to be loose. I started to take the door apart to investigate. I took off the top door trim piece and was able to remove the outer door glass. I then encountered the handle brackets (#14 04-Door / Drawer parts for Maytag MER5755QAW )which attaches to the inner door behind the outer glass and uses a screw that comes from behind to attach the handle to the top trim piece. Upon investigating the hole in which the screw goes into the handle I discovered it was cracked. Several attempts with JB weld and other methods and unfortunately it looks like I will need to get a new handle. Worse the outer glass that I had removed successfully later shattered. Ok so all that background to get to my problem. Although it is not logical I cannot figure out how to re-install the outer door glass. If I attach the handle brackets first I cannot put the glass in the door. I thought at first i could place the top edge of the glass into the groove for it on the underside of the top trim piece of the door and then "swing" the glass down to the bottom grooves in the lower part of the door. But it does not fit. Of course if I put the glass in first then I cannot attach the handle brackets to the oven door. Specifically the screw from behind into the handle as it goes through the top trim piece and you cant put this piece on and later put the glass in. Did I just somehow remove the outer door glass initially in the wrong way? As I cannot figure out how to put it back in. I looked at various videos on replacing the outer glass door but none of the ovens shown had these brackets. Am I missing something obvious? Do i take one of the side pieces off the door ( #17 or 18) and slide the glass in from the side?? Do i need to take the bottom trim piece off ( #15) ? Also a side question does the outer door glass go in with the thermal tape at the top? Related Models Last edited by ibdavid : 01-25-2013 at 07:03 AM. |

![]() Pretty sure I have figured this out. I see now I can remove the bottom trim piece by removing the storage draw. The outer door glass sits in this bottom trim piece. I should be able to :
1)Remove lower trim piece (#15) 2)Attach handle (#10) to mounting brackets (#13/14) through to trim piece (#10) 3) Attach top trim piece to top of door, attach brackets to inner door surface 4) Insert outer door glass. 5)Re-attach bottom, trim piece. |

![]() Hello David,
You have to remove the door from the oven first. Did you do it? I hope the attached instructions will help. Gene.

![]() Gene, that should be very useful thank you. Hope you can help me with one more issue.
I just received this part (74011768) yesterday and it does not match the original on my MER5755QAW. Specifically the screw holes are different. The original has metal inserts that allow the screw to thread into the handle. The one I received appears to be smaller in diameter has no metal insert nor does it appear to be threaded at all. In the attached photo you can see the original on the left and the new one I received on the right. Does this handle require different screws? If it does require different screws and since it doe not appear to be threaded will I only have one opportunity to screw it to the door top trim piece? Thank you, David Last edited by ibdavid : 01-27-2013 at 06:53 AM. Reason: Added questions on screws |

![]() As the result of the search the screw 74011674 is for the oven door 74011675. For the oven door 74011768 you have to order two screws Part number: 74006515
Honestly I do not see a big difference between them. Gene.

![]() Gene,
I am a bit confused I called whirlpool and they verified the screws I have ( 74011674 ) are for the new handle I have ( 74011768 ). Also this page on appliance parts pro for the handle references the same screws as the correct screws? As you mentioned maybe they are the same |

![]() You can order any one. 74011674 could be even a bit better.
Gene.
