Oven Repair (including Ranges and Cooktops)

I installed a new oven ignitor, it does its job, the gas lights and stays on, but the ignitor stays lit. My question is, doesn't the ignitor turn off once the gas is lighted?
I don't want to wear out the brand new ignitor.

Help!!

The igniter stays lit to keep the gas valve open. Your oven operation is normal
