Our new gas range makes a quiet whirring sound like a small fan blowing sometimes when we have a pot cooking on a top burner.

The oven can be completely cold. When I open the door and put my head inside, it sounds like a small fan in there. It's not constant. In fact, sometimes we realize that the sound had been present only when it stops, even though the top burner is still on.

The parts diagram shows a blower and motor in the oven, but this is not a convection oven, so why is there a blower? What's its function? And should we be concerned about it turning on (probably under thermostatic control) when we're not using the oven, but only the stovetop above?
