ceramic cooktop: one ring of multi ring burner doesn't work

Brand: GE Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

My nephew has a GE ceramic cooktop stove (I don't have the model #). There is a 3 ring burner where the inner section does not work. There is a 3 position switch above the infinite switch to select which rings operate. Can anyone provide steps to troubleshoot the problem. I have not lifted the top to see if there is an obvious problem with the burner.

The model # is JB968SOK1SS
12/28 update: disconnected the three wires attached directly to the burner and checked continuity to the lead to the offshoot connectors. One lead was open, the other two gave resistance values. Took off the burner and the end of the inner element was broken where it went into the common terminal. Ordered a replacement burner.
Received and installed the new burner this afternoon. All three sections of the burner worked afterward. Disappointed no one replied to help with the troubleshooting process.
