The oven temperature control knob spins freely and does not change the temperature or turn the oven on or off. It also come offs easily and the peg (for lack of a better word) that the knob fits on is also wobbly. What could be the problem and how can we fix it?

That is impossible to say without knowing which exact appliance is involved. Please post its complete model number so we can look it up to see what appliance design you're dealing with.
