Oven Repair (including Ranges and Cooktops)

The oven temperature control knob spins freely and does not change the temperature or turn the oven on or off. It also come offs easily and the peg (for lack of a better word) that the knob fits on is also wobbly. What could be the problem and how can we fix it?
