Our Tappan range is about 5 yrs old and the oven stopped heating a few months ago. Sometimes it would heat but then go out when you had something baking. It has been flashing error code F1, which according to the owners manual, means the clock needs to be replaced. Is this something the average person could do on a weekend?

That is the most common cause of an F1 error message but on some controls that same message can be displayed by a problem in the oven temperature sensor (see the following links). That sensor should be tested before replacing the electronic control just in case.

That would depend on how handy that average person was. Most reasonably handy homeowners should be able to replace a range's electronic control if necessary.
