Question Oven Ignition WOOF!
Model Number: FGF355AWE   Brand: Frigidaire   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

About 1/2 the time, when starting the oven, there is quite a delay before it lights, and then WOOF, as though the ignitor didn't come on soon enough. No explosion that shakes the kitchen, but definitely not right. Certainly scares you the first time it happens. After it is running, it seems to work fine. Controls seem normal. Range works fine. Could this be a failing ignitor, or is it likely some sort of vent problem, control issue, or something else?

If I understand right, this isn't spark ignition, but a hot electric heater element ignition. Is it reasonable for that to be intermittent?

Could be a week ignitor.

Can I diagnose that? Maybe a resistance check, or an IR thermometer reading? I hate to guess, and just swap parts that "might" be the problem.

Is there a way to test for a weak ignitor without just guessing and swapping a part willy-nilly?

There MUST be a way to test the ignitor, right?

I use a clamp on amp meter to test a ignitor. The gas valve has printed on the side how many amps the ignitor must draw to open the valve.

Ah, I see... So... high resistance of either the ignitor or the safety valve could prevent the safety valve from opening reliably. Likewise, it's possible that dirt or debris could be restricting gas flow in the burner. Will check and report back. Many thanks, AJ!

After running the self-clean function, the oven is now working properly. Might have been some debris, which burned off during the high temperatures of the self-cleaning, that was preventing proper ignition.
