Default oven igniter still activer after burner is lit
Brand: Magic Chef   Age: More than 10 years

Does anyone have a similar problem, or know what causes the igniter to keep glowing after the burner is lit? and also is this a hazard? Both the oven burner and the broiler burner do the same, I just noticed this before Christmas and have no idea how long it has been this way. The oven seems to function fine otherwise.

Paul

Hi Paul,

This is normal.

The igniter is wired in series with the burner valve. When the thermostat calls for heat, line voltage is applied to the circuit. As the igniter begins to glow, the current increases. The current flow causes the gas valve to open when the igniter becomes bright red (almost white). Flat igniters operate from 3.2 to 3.6 amps. The gas valve stays open as long as the igniter stays "on".

Happy Holidays!

Gene.
