My matag gas oven will preheat fine, but will struggle keep temp. I can see the igniter glow red and hear the gas valve cycling on off very rapidly, do not believe this normal for gas valve. Any ideas as what it might be. Thank you.

What is the ignitor doing during this time? The gas valve should remain open steadily as long as the ignitor is glowing.

The igniter during the time the valve is cycling is staying off, gas valve is not shuting off long enough to extinguish the flame. so igniter never comes back on until it frist lights the burner, then it glows steady.

The gas valve will not open nor stay open without power. Its power also goes through the ignitor. I can only think the power to the whole ignition system may be cycling and not staying on long enough to allow the ignitor to reach full glow.

Power to the ignition system not staying on could be caused by the control failing, maybe the ignitor or gas valve having an intermittent failure or possibly a loose connection in the wiring between the control and the gas valve and ignitor.

Some further investigation will likely be required to pinpoint which might be responsible. IMO a failing electronic control is most likely to cause rapid power fluctuations to the ignition circuit.

You can read how a hot surface (glow ignitor) oven ignition system is suppose to work at the following link.

LINK > Understanding Gas Oven Ignition Systems

I would think seeing what the power to the ignitor circuit is actually doing would be one of the first things a technician might confirm.

I believe the igniter is causing my problem. I checked the power circuit and found 120v going to the igniter and only 2.5 amps going to gas safety valve, when it is being called apon. Acording to repair guide link that my style igniter needs to have 3.2 to 3.6 amps to operate properly and it could cause the gas valve to pulse like what is happening my oven. I think this is the right path to take? Unless you think I might be missing something. Thanks
