Model Number: FDO180-2D Brand: Modern Maid Age: More than 10 years
After high usage during Thanksgiving, including two different automatic cleaning sessions, my Modern Maid FDO180-2D lower oven won't heat anymore. Due to the fact Modern Maid is no longer in business and that many parts aren't in stock, I would like to know what is likely to be wrong with it and a referral to a qualified repair source. We live in zip 90803.

Hello I also have a Modern Maid Oven ( Gas) which all of a sudden the bottom element will not work. The broiler however still works, and the stove top also gas works. Can you tell me if the bottom element needs to be replaced? Thank You. The model is PHU201. Lois

Lois,
Most likely the problem is a bad bake (bottom) igniter. - The part number for the oven igniter is AP2934763 Here are the break down diagrams for the Modern Maid range Model PHU201UB Gene.

I also have a problem with my Modern Maid FDO180-2D oven where the bottom oven will not heat (bake or broil) even though the control panal thinks the lower oven is on. Have replaced the thermostats in the past for this condition, but was wondering if there was a way to diagnose the problem so I am 100% certain it is a bad thermostat?
Regarding the Hi-Limit thermostats. Have replaced 3 in the past, two were Hamilton's 31-059351 (which matches the part number on the repair orders). One was a Stemco 31-052502 (which matches the part number on the Modern Maid Parts List Catalog (parts #3 and 4 for the Control Compartment). The customer service people have told me that these parts have been discontinued, however an Internet Search yields the 052502 part by Maytag ... will that work? Thanks in advance for any help you can give. |

You have to remove the oven from the cabinet and remove the rear panel. Remove the wires from the Bake element and check the element for continuity. If there is nothing wrong then check for 120VAC between each wire and ground while the control calls for Bake. If there is wrong reading on one of the leg, trace this wire up to a device where it's connected to. Post the results.

I just had another thought that could be a temporary fix.
What if I asked my hubby to swap the thermostats so that the broken one is in the top oven (which we mainly use as a microwave), and then put the good one in the bottom oven (which we mainly use to bake/roast etc). In the past, it was the same part # for both ovens. Doesn't a thermostat control heating element? If so, it is really not needed to run the microwave in the top oven? |

There are a few parts involved in the heating process. That's why you have to perform the troubleshooting first. If the thermostat is the culprit then you can swap them.

The bottom heating element was fine so we swapped the thermostats.
Top oven still microwaves and the bottom oven now can be used to bake/broil which is how we were using the ovens 99% of the time anyway. Thanks for your help. Next question, if/when this good thermostat dies what brands of 27" double oven or oven/micro combo do you recommend from a repair standpoint? The ones with the closet cutout size were the Thermador, KitchenAid, or Jenn-Air. |

There is no cross references for this part, so this is very questionable.
