Microwave Shutdown & Reset issue
Model Number: JTP90SP2SS Brand: GE Age: Less than 1 year
I have a brand new GE oven/microwave combo. The problem is with the microwave portion of the built in. After cooking something on high >6 min, or two subsequent cooking cycles >3-4 min each, the microwave will go dark. No display, no keypad response, no light when door is opened - nothing. The lower thermal oven works with no problems. The first time this happened, I tried resetting the breaker, with no results.
After 15-20 minutes, the microwave portion of the control panel display will light back up asking to set the clock (typical of a power interruption). The microwave will then work fine for short cook cycles (<2 min), until the next long cook cycle. Then it will shut down again.
Being an engineer, and having a decent amount of appliance repair experience (including microwaves), I think it is probably a thermistor or thermal fuse issue. However, the thermistor is opening for a reason (i.e. excessive heat or faulty) either at the magnetron or elsewhere. Or...it could be something completely different - like the control board.
Does anyone have any thoughts? I really don't want to get hosed by a repair tech who has no idea how to diagnose these issues, and just replaces parts until he gets it right. Plus, it's technically under warranty, and I don't want to call GE Customer Service unless I know for sure this operation is faulty. Serial number is DV603627Q
